Bikini or one-piece? Print or plain? The swimwear season is still apprehended by many women today. To eradicate the dilemma once and for all, in 2011, Beth Richards launched her eponymous brand of swimwear. At the time, this Toronto native just moved to Vancouver and discovered a need to design her own beachwear collection. Faced with the limited choices available, this International Academy of Design and Technology graduate, who has made her mark with several clothing and accessory labels, jumped in the wagon and relied on the adage: if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself.
A feminist and former ballerina, she aimed to create swimwear to help women feel more confident about their bodies, without ever objectifying them. Concerned about her brand image, she made sure that all the hired models were over 19 and each photoshoot was held in a professional manner. As for her creations, almost all are named after iconic characters admired by the designer, featuring camouflage and embracing her clientele preferences of what to highlight or hide. The ultimate goal? That women no longer feel the pressure of buying a swimsuit and enjoy looking for one.
Beth Richards not only respects women but also the environment. The label's both sporty and elegant pieces are "Made in Canada" in order to minimise the brand's carbon footprint as well as its waste.
