From the street to the sofa and from the stadium to the catwalk, sweatpants have become one of the most versatile and essential garments in the contemporary wardrobe.

With remote working and its dressed-down codes becoming a part of our daily lives, sweatpants are once again sported far and wide. We may have thought that the sun had set on the empire of the sweat following the 2000s: after all, who could forget the paparazzi snaps of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, donning them day and night. And of course, they also featured in unforgettable rap videos by legends like Run-DMC, who popularized them in the 80s. Whatever the case may be, fashion has a way of shaking up our certainties. Following their proliferation on catwalks over the last few years, today sweatpants are firmly established as a quarantine essential. At Moncler, Prada, Givenchy and Balenciaga they're somber-toned curve-huggers, baggier and less-structured at Y/Project, glistening satin at Acne Studio, and rendered in blue prints at GMBH. They're marked with brand logos at Moschino and Burberry, and Vivienne Westwood — last but never least — offers a fun tie & dye pair. For all personal aesthetics, there's an abundance of choices!

There was a time in which sweatpants were largely meant for athletes, serving to keep the body warm and thus more flexible during physical exertion. These soft, stretchy pants, initially tapered at the ankle, appeared in athletic-wear as early in the 1920s, becoming more popular through media-heavy international competitions. Nevertheless, we still had to wait until the 1960s for sweatpants to be embraced outside the arena, coinciding with social trends towards entertainment and consumption. It was only in the 1980s that the fashion took off, thanks to the rise of fitness culture and the New York hip-hop scene. From sportswear to loungewear, dressed down or dressed up, sweatpants are on everyone's radar, and for good reason!
